2014. I don’t really “do” New Year resolutions. However, this year, I’m determined to spend more time painting in oils – directly from the subject, at one go (“alla prima”). I enjoy painting small studies outdoors – but I have been a bit of a fair weather painter to date. Two factors will help me with my good intentions. Firstly, following a speculative post to a group on Facebook last autumn, I now venture up to North Norfolk around once a month to paint with a group of other “plein air” painters and I’m getting used to working in the wind and cold! Secondly, although I’ve always drawn directly from life, most of the life groups I visit or organise are limited to fairly short poses and have limited space which can make painting difficult. So – I’ve recently started to attend a local “long pose” group – where a single figure pose is held over a 2 to 2.5 hour period and where painting is much more suitable. The resulting pictures will be studies, and I certainly won’t upload them all! However, I will post pictures here regularly as a way of recording my progress. Some of these studies will be for sale.
