These are painted in oils on prepared wooden panels which are mostly 8″ x 12″. They are done in front of the landscape that is being depicted and are an excercise in rendering an accurate impression of the light effect on the landscape at the time of painting. Even if I stay painting in the same place for several hours, the light and weather conditions will change throughout the session. I don’t work for much longer than about one hour on any individual panel and aim for accurate strokes of colour and tone that capture the scene as I see it at the time and there is no time for re-painting or adjusting.
