I’ve just learned that my coloured pencil portrait of an octogenarian potter – “Sienna Gentleman” – has been selected for the UKCPS 9th Annual Open Exhibition 2010. This year, the exhibition will be held at Stamford Arts Centre in Lincolnshire and is open to the public from Tuesday 14th September to Friday 1st October (Monday – Saturday 9.30 am to 9.00 pm). There will be CP demonstrators there throughout the exhibition and I hope to be there myself for a couple of days at least. Watch this space for further details! The portrait (which is done with Derwent Aquatone on a prepared wooden panel 24″ x 16″) started life as a demonstration at the Cumberland Pencil Museum in September 2009 and was mostly finished during 2 further days of demonstrating on the UKCPS stand at the Art and Materials Show at the NEC later that autumn. It is loosely based on a section of a photo I took in 2008 while Lorry and I were on a driving holiday to Italy. Being an artist (and being married to a potter!) we seek out art galleries and potteries wherever we are! This gentleman and his wife ran one of the oldest established ceramics shops in old Sienna (S Caterina Ceramiche) – where they specialised in tin-glazed work often decorated in the local colours of black and sienna. Despite our lack of conversational Italian and their corresponding lack of conversational English, we still had a very gestural 20 minute conversation about pottery! Below is a photo of a couple of small pieces we bought from the shop. The dish is just under 10″ x 7.5″ and typical of the kind of decoration they specialised in. The little pot stands just under 5″ in height and we couldn’t resist it!By the way! Sienna is gorgeous and we can’t wait to go back there.

This week, I had a very short notice request (through an acquaintence) for a memento to be given as a leaving gift to a favourite teacher retiring after years of service to a village school close to where we live here on The Fylde in Lancashire. With a couple of clear days available at the beginning of the week, the school was visited and photographed, the drawing done, matted and framed – all within about 36 hours! The drawing is about 7.75 x 4.75 inches and mounted in a 12 x 9 inch oak frame. It is graphite pencil on Arches Aquarelle hot pressed 140 lb paper. Being right on a through road, with no pathway on the opposite side of the road, it was quite difficult to get a really good view of the school. However, in the end, I decided to focus on showing a welcoming path to the front door. I was pleased with the result (it’s a while since I’ve done pure graphite on paper!) and I’ve since had a text to say that the recipient was delighted!!

I spent last weekend (12th/13th June) at “Art and Garden” – a local Preston art fair in a gorgeous garden and grounds just outside the city in the delightfully named Salmsbury Bottoms. My second year there – it seems to be as a much a social event as a selling one and not many pictures seemed to be sold by any of the artists. We all sold art cards though and lots of people were very interested in my work – even if they didn’t feel motivated to unlock their cheque books for us!! After last year’s experience, where I took a bit of everything that I do, I only took a range of framed landscapes, a selection of original life drawings and blank greetings cards reproduced from some of my work – all of which were moderately priced. However, I think that most visitors attend in order to see the gardens (which are lovely) and view the free art exhibitions – I recognised many faces from last year – many of whom seem to be members of local arts societies or groups.

Here’s what my little corner looked like on Saturday – when we had the best weather. I rearranged things a bit for the Sunday and made it look a bit less cluttered. I was on a fairly narrow corridor opposite a lovely couple who made novelty items out of re-cycled silver spoons! They kept up a fairly constant cry of “all made from re-cycled cutlery” in order to arrest passers by. I resisted the temptation to counter with “these painting are all done with fresh paint!”. Still – it was a pleasant weekend even though I can’t yet retire on the proceeds!!

I’ve just returned from a three-day working visit to The Cumberland Pencil Museum in Keswick (8th, 9th & 10th June). It was my third session of demos and workshops and even more enjoyable than previous visits. I’m really there to demonstrate my ways of working with Derwent Aquatone – the product I’m currently using for my large panel pieces. Actually, in reality I’ve got a free pass to enthuse and campaign for coloured pencils and to talk about art, life and most points between!! I love the challenge of working with those visitors who say they can’t draw and think they are only there to watch (I’ve a surprise for them!) and the opportunity to discuss the finer points of technique with more experienced artists from far and wide.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, I did hour-long demonstration sessions in the museum. On Thursday, I lead a full-day workshop with a group of artists who have booked in for the whole day. The subject of this session was “Big and Bold, Wet and Dry” and focussed on ways of using Derwent Aquatone. In addition to some drawing exercises and new techniques, for the first time I also gave the participants a chance to work on the larger, prepared wooden panels that I use for much of my own work. Thanks very much to Elinor, Angela, Rebecca, Susan, Wendy, Fay, Suzy and Mike – who seemed to have a good time and were very tolerant of my “evangelising” around the use of coloured pencils as a fine art medium.

While I was at the Museum, I was also able to take a good look at the UKCPS “World of Coloured Pencil Exhibition” sponsored by Derwent and hosted by The Pencil Museum. With a small exhibition space for only 24 pictures, entry was by ballot and proves to be a really excellent display of the variety of work that is possible with coloured pencils. For further details and an on-line look at the entries – go to www.ukcps.co.uk

I shall be back at The Pencil Museum with more demonstrations and a workshop day in October (5th, 6th & 7th) with the subject “Herdwick Sheep and Lakeland Beasts in Aquatone”.
